Would you be willing to donate an 11-second sample of solo guitar to a project honoring guitar genius Nigel Tufnel? It is to be a sound collage contructured from 1111 11-second unaccompanied guitar solos.
As the piece is assembled, the cobbled-together, work-in-progress will be posted here:
My interest in Tufnel ‘s guitar stylings is decades old.
From a 2001 interview in Cadence Magazine by Ludwig Van Trikt. (Some guitarists have doubted the authenticity of the quote. It’s real. Somewhere I have a hard copy of the magazine.)
Van Trikt: Besides the A.A.C.M -most of your other influences seem to be in the “new music” realm. You describe Negel (sic) Tufnel as the greatest influence on your work. Why so?
Fields: Nigel Tufnel is the character played by Christopher Guest in the mock-rock band “Spinal Tap.” In other words he is not a real person. I liked the movie.
As you know well, November 11 (11.11) is Nigel Tufnel Day.
In early 2011 I launched a Kickstarter campaign to celebrate Nigel Tufnel Day: Turbocharged! 11.11.11. The proposal was to ask 1111 guitarists to provide 11-second long samples of their playing on amps turned up to 11. Then I’d collage them into a 1”11’ long CD for release. But then real paying work came through and I decided cancelled the campaign and figured I’d wait until 2111.
Now, however, I am determined to complete this important mission. Submissions continue to arrive and as they do I add them to the rough cut. When we reach critical mass, I will rearrange all of the Elevens until the piece couldn’t be more Eleven. That version will be pressed.

If you like, you can send a longer sample. I’ll trim the fat.
The sample doesn’t have to be new, but it does have to be legal for me to release it.
I won’t make money on the project. In the unlikely event that money is made, the contributors will vote on what to do with it.
Everyone will receive equal billing, alphabetical, or reverse alphabetical, or pseudo-random number generated in equal size. No big type for stars and little type for schlubs like me.
The project will be presented as “11” rather than Scott Fields’ 11 or anything like that. I’ll be listed as producer.
At some point I’ll have to post to social media to find enough people. The participation pitches will include the names of everyone who has agreed to date.
